History of Theodore B. Starr's Silverware:
Theodore B. Starr was a company of silversmiths founded in New York in 1862 by Theodore Starr. In 1864, he was joined by Herman Marcus, and the company became known as Starr and Marcus. Marcus left to join Tiffany's in 1877, and Starr bought back control of the company, with the name of the company becoming Theodore B. Starr. The store was located at 206 Fifth Avenue, near Madison Square, in a highly fashionable neighborhood. An article published in the New York Times on December 20, 1890, declared that "Starr’s establishment… has no duplicate in this country, and probably not in the world." Among the wares produced by the firm were silver spoons in historical revival styles. The company was incorporated in 1907 by Starr's son, before being bought in 1918 by Reed and Barton, a silver firm, and finally closing in 1923. Starr's silverware and bronze pieces are now in many museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Vintage/Antique Items:
Please note that most vintage/antique items may have minor wear due to their age and being loved, which we believe only adds to the charm and patina of these pieces. Because the items sold in our shop are vintage or antique, there are often small condition issues, which we do our best to accurately disclose and photograph in the listings.
While we try very hard to describe our items accurately, it is possible that the eye of a true collector might see something that we do not. If you are particular about your vintage items, please ask questions before you buy. We really want you to be happy with your item and have confidence in your purchase.
