Maud Frere (1923-1979) was a Belgian-French novelist who wrote of the post-WWII reality for Belgium. She also wrote a very famous series of childrens' books about a little French schoolgirl named Nicole that were all translated into English. In a spirited lively style Nicole tells of her first days at school, getting the measles, walking in her mother's high-heeled shoes, playing make-believe, and various other activities. Nicole also tells a good deal about her cousin Odilon, whose mother thinks him a darling little boy but who is always lording it over Nicole. Nicole's attempts to hold her own against her bigger and stronger cousin will endear her to all children and win new friends for this little French girl who was introduced to American readers in "My Name Is Nicole".
