17th/18th Century Russian Icon, Virgin of Smolensk and Child with Elders
17th/18th Century Russian Icon, Virgin of Smolensk and Child with Elders
Very Early Russian Icon, Probably 17th-18th Century
From the private collection of "time life" photographer John Bryson.
John Bryson traveled to Russia frequently on Armond Hammer's private jet during multiple photographic assignments in the 50s and 60s
Many of these 17th/18th century icons are copied using old materials,
techniques, pigments and such. On very close inspection, aside from a few
added nails through the years that were necessary to keep it together, this piece
IS showing its' age. The blacks stains where many missing nails were, the obvious age of the
few handmade nails that are left, the close ups of the wood holes and cracks showing the build up
of layers of dust and dirt over the many years. The pigments & glue showing their age.
The piece is showing extreme wear and cracking from both age and mistreatment. But the
history is remarkable none the less, the fact that it is still in sound condition is a testimony to
craft it took make this Icon, and the artistry is also stunning. Taking close up views of the pigments
and colors will astound and amaze even the novice and advanced students of fine art.
